£819mil­lion’s worth of for­eign cur­rency is cur­rently sit­ting in house­holds and of­fices across the coun­try, while air­ports ben­e­fit from over £725mil­lion spent on gi­ant Toblerones, fridge magnets, sou­venir t-shirts and other taste­less trin­kets at duty free. The fig­ures from Weswap, which is launch­ing the na­tion’s first ‘cur­rency cleanup’, sug­gest that on av­er­age, £90 in ex­cess cur­rency is brought back from an overseas trip, lead­ing to a to­tal of £2.5bil­lion, al­though much of it is changed back into ster­ling
