Kanturk boots are made for high hill walking
JUST shy of 60 Duhallow hillwalkers put their best foot forward on two separate occasions last month and tackled Mount Brandon in Kerry. The six hour jolt was all in aid of Kanturk Community Hospital and Marymount Hospice.
The Kanturk Hillwalkers and Mountain Climbers was only formed one year ago, but since then, the hardy bunch have undertaken charity walks for Pieta House and the Twomey Remorial.
One of its organisers, Padraig Breen told The Corkman that one group of their walkers tackled Mount Brandon on Sunday, September 20. However, the weather Gods didn’t oblige the 18 walkers as the heavens opened and duly bucketed down upon them.
“Despite the rain the group of 18 trudged onwards and it really bucketed it down on the day,” he said.
Fast forward to the following Sunday and another group hit Mount Brandon, but this time the sun came out of hiding for the entire time.
He said a lot of people in the region go walking on their own, so one year ago, it was decided to form a group.
He said that while they are still in the early stages what is very important is that they always have highly experienced climbers with them when they do go out.
Besides Mr Breen, other organisers include Anna Ozimkowska, Ger Morrissey and Kieran Fitzgerald.
“Kanturk Community Hospital do vital work for the people of Duhallow and we felt they were a very worthy charity recipient,” Mr Breen said
He also said that almost every family in the country has been touched by the blight that is cancer and with this in mind, Marymount Hospice should equally be rewarded for all their work with people who need them most.
Anyone who is interested in joining them for future outings should email kanturkmt.climbers@gmail.com or text 0861553685.
