Sean Óg to deliver Moylan oration

The Corkman - - NEWS - BILL BROWNE

TRIPLE All-Ireland winning Cork hurling great Seán Óg O hAilpín will deliver the oration at the 60th annual Sean Moylan Commemoration in Kiskeam this coming Sunday.

Proceedings will commence at noon with mass for Sean Moylan and his deceased colleagues after which a colour party, led by the Cullen Pipe Band, will make its way to the graveside. Prior to the oration a wreath will be laid at the grave and a decade of the rosary recited by Donal O’Leary.

Afterwards a fascinating exhibition of memorabilia from the Irish War of Independence will be on display in the Kiskeam Community Centre.

A commandant during the War of Independence, Sean Moylan was subsequently elected as a Fianna Fáil TD for Cork North in the 1932 general election. During his time in Dáil Éireann he served as Minister for Lands, Minister for Education and Minister for Agriculture.

Cork North-West TD Michael Moynihan said it was fitting that Seán Óg would be delivering this year’s oration.

“For my generation, Seán Moylan was a man to look up to, to respect and admire. For younger generations, the name Seán Óg O hAilpín evokes the same level of respect and admiration. As such, it will be wonderful to have him deliver this year’s oration,” said Deputy Moynihan.

He said the exhibition would allow people to see at first hand artefacts and items that have a direct link to one of the most tumultuous periods in Irish history.

“I am asking that the people of Duhallow, and those with an interest in our local republican heritage, attend this very important commemoration and use the opportunity to see memorabilia directly connected to our revolutionary past,” he added.
