‘Indie’ 2018 spoken word and comedy line-up unveiled
WITH headline acts including Primal Scream, Jake Bugg and Walking On Cars already on the bill for the 2018 Indiependence Music and Arts Festival, this year’s event is gearing up to be one of the most exciting of the Irish summer festival season.
Add to that a raft of other international acts such as Kate Nash, and a host of established and up-coming Irish performers, and it is little wonder that tickets for the August bank holiday bash at Mitchelstown’s Deer Farm are in fierce demand. As its name would suggest, Indiependence is not just about music, something that organisers underscored this week in the best possible way by unveiling the festival’s spoken word and comedy line-ups.
Taking place on the Little Big Stage, ‘Spoken Word’ will be emceed by 96FM DJ Darren Johnson, with Dundalk punk poet Jinx Lennon, fresh from the release of his ninth album, ‘Grow A Pair’, set to be one of the star attractions.
He will be joined on the weekend bill by Dublin poet and author Karl Parkinson, Mitchelstown’s Mike Cullen Aherne, west cork poetry collective Scene of the Rhyme, Shakalak and US multi-slam champion Clara Rose Thornton, among others.
Culture vultures, a themed pop culture event of words and music curated by Irish Times music writer Tony Clayton-Lea, will also make a welcome return to the Beer Hall.
That will also be the venue for this year’s comedy offering, which will be curated by Andrew Stanley and will feature performances by some of Ireland’s best-known comedic talent.
These will include ‘Hardy Bucks’ star Owen Colgan, YouTube sensation Enya Martin, ‘Republic of Telly’ and ‘2XM’ star Emmanuel Idama, star of ‘ The Savage Eye’ and ‘ The Panel’ John Colleary, and ‘Fr Ted’s’ Kevin Gildea.
