Fermoy handballers win all Cork final
THE Feile Festival of Handball at Galway venues last weekend produced a highly skilful display of top class play in the different division of Boys and Girls teams in 40x20, 60x30 and One Wall. The Cork clubs involved competed in the 40x20 code and did not disappoint as they proved themselves well up to the task that confronted them. The standard across all divisions was exceptionally high which in turn meant every contest was hard won.

CORK U-17 DEVELOPMENT Cork clubs Fermoy and Ballydesmond were involved with both putting in big displays in disposing of strong opponents to ensure an all Cork final that did not disappoint as both gave it their all in their efforts to be crowned champions. Eventually by the narrow margin of just two aces Fermoy edged the verdict taking gold on a score of 29 aces to 27. The Fermoy team was Cian Cronin O’Neill, Ben Sullivan, Cameron O’Sullivan, Aaron Swalbe O’Sullivan and Jack Keating.
Ballydesmond, who had to settle for silver, lost nothing in defeat as their team of Eoin Daly, John Cronin, Jack Vaughan, Darragh Murphy, Colin Brosnan gave it their all. Conna 1 team took the spoils in 40x20 Division 4 Plate narrowly edging out Clare club Clooney-Quin by a three ace margin 27 aces to 24. The Conna team on duty were Stephen Cotter, Fionn O’Connell, Nathan Sheehan and Cliona Dunning.
Boherbue were successful in Division 5 Plate they defeated Galway side Annaghdown on a score of 31 aces to 22. Boherbue team was Donal Murphy, Darragh Moynihan, Tomas O’Connor, Carmel Kelliher, Sean Og Sheehan.
The Ballydesmond Girls team reached the Girls Division 3 Plate Final losing to Williamstown,Galway on a score of 45 aces to 24. The Ballydesmond team on duty was Leaha O Riordan, Npreen Doody, Amy Brosnan and Grainne O’Connell. Conna who also had a second Boys team competed in Division 5, while Ballydesmond who also had a second Boys team competed in Division 6 while both performed well they did not make it to the cloncluding stages.
Cork players also performed well in Skills competition in each Division with Gold, Silver and Bronze for the first three. Conna’s Nathan Sheehan was the most successful he was the winner in Boys Division 4. In Girls Division 2 Sarah Walsh,Mallow took second place.
In Boys Division 5 Donal Murphy, Boherbue, finished second closely followed by Cian Dunning, Conna, who filled third spot. In Boys Division 2 Cian Cronin O’Neill, Fermoy, secured third spot. Great credit to Galway Handball Board and their team of officials for the overall organisation which was excellent all going smoothly plan and with such a big entry there was a lot of work involved.
As the World Championship in Minnesota comes closer the emphasis for the players travelling to the Worlds in the coming weeks will be very much focused on advancing their training regime with the hope of World glory in Minnesota. As a result much of the normal inter-county scene is on hold until late August.
