Six goal Lyre advance to next round of championship

-

Lyre 6-25 Kanturk 2-8

LYRE cut loose on producing a powerful display to easily account for a disappointing Kanturk in the E Tarrant & Sons Duhallow JAFC Round 2 at a sweltering Castlemagner.

In scorching conditions, Lyre sauntered through in impressive fashion, never any disputing the victors authority and they had the issue in safe keeping by the interval. Indeed Lyre worked efficiently for the hour, grafting their way through a test that ultimately proved a lot more easier than many would had anticipated.

The contest was just two minutes old when Lyre’s game flickered to life from a Liam O’Brien goal. That put together a perfect platform to push home their advantage with David Murphy in fine kicking form.

Operating some excellent combined play, Damien Kearney, Colm Coughlan and James Twohig held command in the Lyre defence, Timmie Murphy and Kevin Tarrant won a generous supply at midfield with Denis Roche, Paudie Ryan and Liam O’Brien ever so sharp up front. And their cause was boosted on quick fire goals from Ryan and Jamie Sexton midway through the opening half.

In fairness, Kanturk came out of their shell and a Kevin Smith goal offered encouragement though trailing 3-12 to 1-4 at the break.

However, Lyre had Kanturk on the back foot quickly upon the restart, quick fire goals from brothers Liam and Evan O’Brien ensured the winners kept the tempo high.

Kanturk attempted to remedy the situation through the efforts of Dan O’Donoughue, Chris Mullane, Ronan O’Brien and Cathal Burke. A Burke goal coupled with points from Barry Kenneally and Mullane offered a ray of hope.

However, Kanturk lacked the credentials to trim the sails of a high flying Lyre that saw full-forward Ryan grab a second goal.

There had been an air of inevitability surrounding the outcome from a long stage in a complete performance from Lyre.

The outcome compensates for a 1st round defeat for Lyre by Dromtariffe earlier in the campaign. By virtue of a bye in the opening hurdle, Kanturk’s second string are entitled to a second chance but a big improvement will be sought against Dromtariffe if they harbour hopes of remaining in contention.
