Doneraile lose out to Kilara in Shield

-

Kilara Óg 3-20 Doneraile 1-8

HAVING lost the championship final to Doneraile in recent months Kilara Óg (Kilworth/Araglin) gained revenge at Ballyhooly on Sunday when they ran out easy winners in the Rebel Óg Northern Minor B2 Hurling Shield final.

From the offset the winners set out their intentions with team captain Eoin Carey turning in a huge performance while others to impress throughout the game included Leon Coffey, Sean Hegarty, Jack Kearney, Diarmuid Allen and Michael Gowen.

They were 0-2 to no score to the good before Doneraile opened their account when Stephen Ryan pointed in the seventh minute. Leo Coffey and Darren Linehan traded a point before Kilara Óg moved double scores in front when Eoin Carey pointed a free in the 11th minute.

Doneraile enjoyed their fair share of possession in this half with Tony O’Flynn, Cian Donlon, Stephen Ryan and Darren Linehan doing rather well and by the 17th minute a point each by Darren Linehan and Nathan Relihan reduced the margin to 0-5 to 0-4.

However, for the rest of the game Kilara Óg prevailed with Eoin Carey playing a leading role at mid field scoring the next four points that moved them 0-9 to 0-4 in front.

Doneraile got themselves right back in contention when Darren Linehan cut through the Kilara Óg defence and finished to the net but it was the winners that held a healthy lead at the interval.

Eoin Carey (3) Diarmuid Allen and Sean Hegarty chipped in with points before Eoin Carey with a goal from a penalty in injury time helped hold a 1-14 to 1-5 lead at the break.

On the changeover any hopes of a Doneraile revival were quickly dashed when Leo Coffey struck for the winners second goal within seconds of the throw in. Kilara Óg pushed forward at every given opportunity and a second goal by Leo Coffey in the 41st minute following a good delivery by Jack Kearney stretched their advantage to 3-17 to 1-7.

In the last quarter the winners added three more points courtesy of Michael Sheehan (2) and Eoin Carey with Darren Linehan having a consolation point for Doneraile. In the end there was no denying Kilara Óg a comprehensive victory.

After the game John O’Brien on behalf of the Rebel Óg Board presented the shield to the winning captain Eoin Carey.
