Faces of Newmarket to be pictured for Scullys Fest

LOCALS CAN HAVE THEIR PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN ON FEBRUARY 24 AHEAD OF AUGUST EXHIBITION

- MARIA HERLIHY

THERE are towns and villages throughout Duhallow which all have their characters, both young and not so young – nd what better way to capture these personalities than by using photography.

in Newmarket, a new project, ‘Faces of Newmarket’ will do exactly that: two of its talented photographers will capture the people of Newmarket in portrait photos, and the door is open to the entire community to have their photo taken, which will then be exhibited at Scullys Fest in August.

The idea for this unique project stemmed from photographer Eddie Hennessy, who will team up with fellow photographer Eileen O’Connor to put down a foundation for August’s exhibition.

“The project will be ongoing and we want to get everyone in Newmarket involved, from the young to the elderly,” said Eddie.

Eddie always had an interest in photography, but it wasn’t until he suffered a major stroke in 2008, when he was just 33 years old, that he began to take a very different outlook on life.

“Strangely enough, it gave me the opportunity to purse this interest, and I haven’t looked back since. This developed into a passion, and I wake up every day grateful that I get to do something that I absolutely love,” said Eddie.

He previously worked on a similar project in Cork city, and he is excited to team up with Eileen O’Connor on this interesting project, which will no doubt capture not only the people but their personalities in photographs.

“This is so different to weddings; this is about capturing the personality of the people, while my style of wedding photography is about telling the story of the day,” said Eileen O’Connor.

“Eddie came up with the idea and I was honored when he asked me to join in. I greatly admire his talent and passion, and he is an absolute gentleman. Scullys Fest’s committee is also fantastic and there’s a great buzz around the project,” said Eileen.

The main photoshoot for this project will be held at the CYMS in Newmarket from 11.30am until 4pm on Sunday, February 24, and there is absolutely no cost involved.

Anyone who wants to have their picture need only turn up.

It will certainly be a slice of visual history also for the town, as it will capture people of all ages who have lived and grown up in the town during different eras.

Scullys Fest is a hugely popular fiveday festival, which will run from Thursday, August 8, until Monday, August 12.

It features plenty traditional Sliabh Luachra music along with other fringe cultural events. It will also be the fourth year of the very successful ‘Ait’ art exhibition, which will be held again Nemarket Motors show room.

Faces of Newmarket will run parallel to Ait as a separate but complementary exhibit.
