THE New Year has started on a high note for the Kanturk Boxing Club as both their national champions, sisters Katie and Leah O’Keeffe, were recognised for their achievements in the National Stadium last year.

Both sisters received the Jack McAuliffe Medal at a Cork County Boxing Board breakfast hosted in the Commons Inn recently. Katie, the younger of the two, was also formally recognised by the County Board for her international achievements, when she represented Ireland in the European Schoolgirl Championships in Albena, Bulgaria in May, and subsequently claimed the bronze medal.

On the national stage, the European medallist was recognised by the IABA - the national governing authority for boxing - in their annual awards evening last Friday, February 1. In attendance at the awards evening were boxers from school level and Elite level.

Katie received a certificate and award in recognition of her huge achievements in claiming bronze in the 2018 European Championships. Katie lost a close fight in the championships, and lost to the Russian girl who went on to claim gold overall.

Kanturk BC is going from strength to strength, and the committee are in the middle of organising their annual tournament, which will be held on Monday, 18th of March at the Castlemagner Community Hall. Any sponsors for the tournament brochure would be greatly appreciated.
