Tony Murphy Memorial Golf weekend
TONY Murphy Memorial Golf Weekend at Charleville Golf Club was played over last weekend and resulted in a win for the team of Brendan Buckley (16) Gay McEvoy (16) and Anne McEvoy (20) who scored 63 points.
In second place, also with 63 points, was the team of Joan Dore (18), Anton Noonan (18) and Sheila Clifford (25), with Ger Gould (13), Syl Barrett (15) and Dan O’Brien (17) in third place.
The golfers were participating in the competition to commemorate the memory of one of the club’s best-known golfers and long serving administrators after he served as the club’s secretary for 44, and was the longest serving golf club secretary in Ireland in his day.
A former hurler with Charleville and U.C.C. teams, he took up golf when his playing career was over, and he excelled at the game also, becoming a single handicap player off three at Charleville Golf Club.
He took over as secretary of the club in 1963 and held that position for the next 44 years, the longest serving golf club secretary in Ireland. This fact was recognised by the GUI when he retired from the position in 2008, and the then chairman of the Munster branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland, Sean McMahon, unveiled a portrait of Tony in the Charleville Golf Clubhouse. He also had a green named in his honour in recognition of his work for and dedication to Charleville Golf Club.
During his tenure of office, he saw the club prosper and grow to become one of the finest parklands course in the country. The crowning accolade came in 2007 when Charleville was named in the top one hundred clubs in Ireland.
He received a People of the Year Award in recognition of his service to the club in 2008 from Charleville Chamber of Commerce.
