The Irish Mail on Sunday - TV Week - - FOOD & DRINK - Nigel Andrew

Following a hugely assured first series, the BBC’S quality legal drama returns, with Martha Costello (Maxine Peake, centre) now a QC, and her rival Clive Reader (Rupert Penry-jones, right) licking his wounds. At Shoe Lane Chambers, senior clerk Billy (Neil Stuke, left) is looking very pleased with himself, as usual, but in reality he’s struggling to keep things afloat. And it doesn’t help when Martha, on her first case as a QC, looks like alienating old-school solicitor Micky Joy (Phil Davis), who brings the chambers a lot of business. In court, Martha finds herself up against Caroline Warwick (Frances Barber), a notorious QC known as Lady Macbeth – while Clive discovers that he has more than met his match when he encounters solicitor ‘George’ Duggan (Indira Varma). A great start. Tuesday, 9pm, BBC1.
