Can we finally say goodbye to tango tans? This summer, the hottest shade for skin bronzing is the Au-tan (autumnal tan) or Fashion Tan, a look that is more radiant sheen and less neon glow! Tan expert Marissa Carter of Carter Beauty in Blackrock, Dublin, says, ‘It’s no longer cool to permanently look like you’ve just jetted back from a fivestar luxury holiday. A much more dignified and natural tan has been spotted on the red carpet and fashion runways this year.’ To get the perfect Au-tan, she recommends the following: ‘To ensure an even tan, dry-brush before you shower or use an exfoliating mitt with an oil-free body wash to get rid of any dead skin. If you have dark circles around your eyes, apply Vaseline to the area before getting spray-tanned. This will act as a barrier and means the skin around your eyes won’t darken further. If you have fair eyebrows, apply some Vaseline through them too so the tan doesn’t make them go orange!’

Of course, the easiest way of all to replicate sunkissed skin is with bronzer. When applied over a foundation that matches the skin, bronzer adds shape to the face as well as colour. Go for a golden shade rather than brown, with minimal shimmer. Liquid, cream or powder — the decision is yours but if you add blush too, keep to the same formulation to avoid looking caked. Apply bronzer around the forehead, temples, jaw, cheekbones and chin to create definition, then add a rosy blush to the apples of the cheeks for a youthful finish. Use the same blush shade in lipstick and sweep some bronzer across your eyelids for a great, and natural-seeming, sunkissed look.

There was wild speculation last year around the fashion and beauty secrets of the Wills and Kate wedding, including which fragrance the soon-to-be Duchess of Cambridge would wear. Well, now we know — it was called Illuminum, created by Fortnum & Mason, and is available now to buy. The scent is truly bridal: top notes of white gardenia and lily wrapped around a jasmine heart, underscored by a warm and sultry amber finish — a delicate and modern floral bouquet of white flowers. Prices start at €85 for 50ml; check out fortnumandma ahead of your own big day, should you want to wear the scent of a real-life princess!
