Christopher Eccleston (above, with MyAnna Buring as Sylvie) delivers a typical powerhouse performance in this punchy three-part story of corruption and redemption. He plays Daniel Demoys, a disillusioned, crooked and amoral council official, whose life is in a complete mess. A terrible husband and father, he is making matters worse by drinking like a fish and indulging in reckless casual sex. Finding himself in desperate trouble after nearly beating a man to death in a drunken frenzy, he seeks out his lawyer sister, who is representing a young man testifying against drugs gangs – and at that point something happens that changes everything, and offers Daniel the chance of redemption, of a new life. But can he escape from his burden of guilt? Monday, 9pm, BBC1.
