RAINBOW NAILS

The summer months haven’t been too kind – but you can still have sunshine at your fingertips! The rainbow nails trend is to paint each finger or toenail a different colour – then add bright bangles for a fun and youthful look. The ideal shape for the fingernails is “squoval”, a square/oval shape that extends just beyond the tip of the finger. The look is simple to recreate, pick complementary shades, such as greens and blues or reds, pinks and corals. Use all gloss finish opaques – mixing in metallics, neons or mattes turns the look wacky – and what you want is the perfect colour manicure.

STREAMLINED BEAUTY

Bits of beauty kit all over the house? Do you go out for the night weighed down with half your make-up bag? Time to ditch the duds and curb your cosmetic quota. A lot of us hoard cosmetics – often old stuff that we don’t use or need. The must-have bag this season is the evening clutch – high in style but low on space. That’s why a tailored palette can be a lifesaver – a slimline compact that carries all the colour you need for eyes, cheeks, face and lips. Only certain brands offer this service – with colour guidance so you make a smart edit. You can pick and mix face powder, highlighter, shadow, blush and lip colour. There are palettes to fit from four items up to 20 and every size slips easily into even the flattest clutch. Best brands to investigate? Bobbi Brown in Brown Thomas, Trish McEvoy in Harvey Nichols.

They are all the buzz on Twitter and reality TV stars including Amy Childs are even wearing them while running errands – sleep-in rollers are back, and better than before! Their simple design – a cylindrical sponge with Velcro outer covering to grip the hair – makes them softer than older rollers and wherever the head rests the sponge will simply flatten out, so no sleepless nights. A pack of 20 equal sized rollers costs just €20.99 and comes with a handy drawstring bag. Online reviews are fairly mixed – but whether you’re on for sleeping in them or not, they offer excellent value for so many rollers and can be used for volume and curl at any time of the day.
