The mo­ment when an adul­ter­ous af­fair is fi­nally ex­posed surely tops the list of soap’s favourite sto­ry­lines. For weeks, or, as is more of­ten the case, months, view­ers are in on the se­cret and watch with de­spair as the un­sus­pect­ing part­ners of the adul­ter­ers obliv­i­ously and in­no­cently go about their daily busi­ness.

Who can for­get that fate­ful Christ­mas Day in EastEn­ders – an episode watched by mil­lions upon mil­lions – when, in the light of his af­fair, Den served Angie with di­vorce pa­pers? Or, years later, Grant’s tears when he heard the tape con­firm­ing Phil’s af­fair with Sharon. ( Tapes! Re­mem­ber those things? These days, the whole thing would be re­layed on an iPhone).
