Beauty apps for your smartphone or tablet can be great for picking up tips before you shop. Many are free on iTunes and one of the best, ModiFace, has had an interesting update of late. ModiFace is a virtual make-up tool that lets you upload a photo of yourself and modify it with endless combinations of make-up and hair. With the new version, you can try skincare options too. If you’ve a particular ailment, such as redness or dark spots, the app can show how to correct or disguise it. An interactive beauty adviser can answer requests such as, ‘Find me eye shadow under €10,’ or ‘Make me up for my date tonight.’ Even if you aren’t planning any purchases, the new ModiFace is still a fun, free app to have. Check it out on iTunes.

There is an oh-so-simple eye trend headed our way for Autumn/Winter that even beginners could master. It is a take on the smoky eye that all ages can wear without feeling overly made up. The ‘chocolate smoky eye’ is one for all eye colours too. Here’s how it’s done: take a chocolate brown powder shadow and sweep it all across the eyelid, stopping short of the socket line. Blend away any harsh edges, naturally. Then, using a black eye liner (pencil is preferable to liquid), line the upper lash line and the inner lower lid. Get an eyelash curler and pump the upper lashes 2-3 times for maximum curl and definition, and add a few coats of black mascara. That’s it, easy! Try it and see how the lush deep brown makes your eye colour really pop!

If eye fashion trends aren’t your thing, the easiest way to nail a dramatic look can be the statement lip. Always a feature on any red carpet, and as timeless a look as you’ll get, a pictureperfect red or pink is a sure head turner. Some skill is required, and a matching lip-liner pencil will help get the shape and hold the colour in place. You can pick a nude pencil but this requires full coverage with the lipstick — so it’s not a good choice if you have any fine lines around your lips since there’ll be more chance of colour bleed. Solid matte colour is this year’s key finish — any shine will date the look. Matte lipsticks now have added conditioning agents so you don’t need gloss. Seek bright colours with cold, blue undertones to make your teeth look whiter. Striking! NUXE CLEANSING WATER WITH PETALS OF ROSE €14.90, pharmacies nationwide Soothing rose water is the key ingredient in this cleanser for face, eyes and lips tailored to sensitive skin. Flower waters are collected during the distillation of essential oils and are a light essence of the flower that retain some properties of the extracted oil. Rose water is powerful in skin care because it is soothing and softening. Apply with a cotton pad; no need to rinse. SHU UEMURA VOLUME MAKER €40, tel: 01 604 5935 for stockists As hair trends go, ‘big hair’ remains popular — and volumising powders are the simplest, quickest way to put some oomph into your roots. They differ from dry shampoos in that they aren’t looking to mop up oil; instead they offer instant volume to clean hair. Volume Maker has a brush to distribute the volumising powder more evenly. Hail high hair: this is a wonder product! CLARINS EYEBROW KIT €39.65, Clarins counters nationwide If you don’t know about this already, Clarins eyebrow kit is the best you can buy. Inside the compact is a mini tweezers, brow brush, shadow and liner brush. There are three brow colours for whatever hair colour is, which double as eye shadow if necessary, brow wax to set the colour and finally a buff-pink shade to brighten tired lids. See, best kit ever — nothing else could fit in there!
