Bye bye, smoky eyes HELLO TO SPRING HUES!
You might have heard that emerald green is colour to covet for SS13? Thankfully, it will be seen more on nails than eyes, but what else is in store for the new season? Well, quite a lot and, unlike other years, most of it is very wearable! This week and next, we’ll dissect the hottest trends for make-up, skin, hair and nails, so you can pick your favourites and update your look in line with your own tastes.
With the return of 1960s-style monochrome fashion, winged eye liner is a big trend, but it doesn’t feel new or all that interesting. What does feel fresh and exciting is colour. Younger girls will get a kick out of a pop of acid bright on the lids or lips. Seen at shows from Paris to Milan, a vivid block of eye colour looks daring. Bright blue was the dominant catwalk choice, with hot pink a close second. For lips, it was show-stopping orange-red hues — and with an exuberant floral fashion trend in the pipeline, a strong lip will bring your look right up to date.
More mature women should take their cue from the Golden Globes, where redhead A-listers Amy Adams, Isla Fisher and Jessica Chastain all rocked a grape lip and great lashes. Dramatic and great for making teeth look whiter, grape is a refreshing alternative to red and needs little else to complete the look. Buy lipstick rather than a stain — in a solid satin or matte finish. Stick with a clear wash of nude on the eyes, or at most a veil of gold. Complete with mascara for definition.
It’s the season of sculpting and pretty soon we’ll be looking at a lot of contouring products. You might be a bronzer by habit but in SS13 you’ll be learning to highlight and shape your face with different cream colours. The desired effect is superb skin that looks totally natural, with a dewy finish — cream products will achieve the look where powder versions won’t do.
There is no end to the colour options in foundation after 2012’s numerous launches; your best bet to master this look is to get colour-matched to your precise skin tone, then buy a contouring cream in a darker shade and get practising!
