Cre­at­ing fra­grance be­gins with a con­cept, a vi­sion that will hope­fully lead to a beau­ti­ful scent. Usu­ally, the imag­in­ings of a new fra­grance be­gin in a board­room but not so with high­end niche fra­grance range Ol­fac­tive Stu­dio. The brand’s con­cept is sim­ple: from a pho­to­graph, a perfume is cre­ated, with founder Cé­line Ver­leure us­ing some of the best pho­tog­ra­phers and per­fumers in the busi­ness. The brand emerged from a Face­book page for perfume lovers — ‘Blog for the fra­grance that doesn’t (yet) ex­ist!’ — where fans could see and comment on ev­ery stage of the fra­grances’ de­vel­op­ment, mak­ing them am­bas­sadors of the scents re­leased. As far-fetched as it might sound, we could be see­ing such tablets sooner than you think! Much re­search is be­ing fo­cused on the ac­tion of ‘cata­lase’ on hair colour. A nat­u­ral en­zyme, cata­lase coun­ter­acts the ef­fects of hy­dro­gen per­ox­ide in the body. As cata­lase lev­els re­duce with age, the hy­dro­gen per­ox­ide lev­els in­crease, al­low­ing it to ‘bleach’ the hair from the in­side out, so re­plac­ing the cata­lase could spell the end of grey hair, some think. Al­ready one US com­pany has cre­ated a sup­ple­ment con­tain­ing the en­zyme from plant ex­tracts. Does it work? Re­views are mixed so far, but watch this space! Yves Saint Lau­rent was one of the first beauty brands to in­ject pig­ment into mas­cara for­mu­las, of­fer­ing colour­ful shades such as blue, pur­ple and green. This month, YSL launches a must-have mas­cara: Vol­ume Ef­fect Faux Cils Baby­doll Mas­cara (€32), which of­fers lashes with max­i­mum vol­ume, thick­ness and full-on drama. It’s avail­able in black, nat­u­rally enough, but, in clas­sic YSL style, it also comes in brown, blue and pur­ple! The new Col­lec­tion de Grasse com­prises four beau­ti­ful fra­grances in­spired by the Provençal town known as the world’s cap­i­tal of perfume. So syn­ony­mous is this beauty brand with Provence that it took its name from the lan­guage of the re­gion, Oc­c­i­tan. The new scents, three for women and this uni­sex one, are up­lift­ing and fresh, per­fect to wel­come the warmer sum­mer months. Gor­geous pack­ag­ing too!

A sum­mer must-have!
