The story behind the film
A Clockwork Orange earned notoriety for its overt depictions of sex and violence when it was released in 1971. Kubrick himself was so disturbed by the hysteria surrounding the film that he withdrew it from circulation three years later. The target of both Burgess (inset) and Kubrick was behavioural psychology. Both were afraid of the use it could be put to by the state. Unfortunately for Kubrick, much of his message was diluted by the graphic imagery he chose to employ.
