A Clock­work Or­ange earned no­to­ri­ety for its overt de­pic­tions of sex and vi­o­lence when it was re­leased in 1971. Kubrick him­self was so dis­turbed by the hys­te­ria sur­round­ing the film that he with­drew it from cir­cu­la­tion three years later. The tar­get of both Burgess (inset) and Kubrick was be­havioural psy­chol­ogy. Both were afraid of the use it could be put to by the state. Un­for­tu­nately for Kubrick, much of his mes­sage was di­luted by the graphic im­agery he chose to em­ploy.
