was just 19 when he starred in Bill Forsyth’s hugely suc­cess­ful small-bud­get 1981 Scot­tish movie Gre­gory’s Girl, as love- struck school­boy Gre­gory. Reg­u­lar TV work fol­lowed, notably in sit­coms Hot Me­tal (1986) and An Ac­tor’s Life For Me (1991) but it’s been more than three years since his last TV role, in an episode of sit­com Rab C Nes­bitt (right, top) in 2010. Now 51, and mar­ried with two daugh­ters, he re­turns to our screens as In­spec­tor Welch (left) in the lat­est Miss Marple mys­tery, Green­shaw’s Folly. John’s de­but novel, Seventy Times Seven, was pub­lished last year.
