Holiday hints for PACKING LIKE A PRO
Keeping your checked baggage limit firmly at the forefront of your mind, it’s time to think about packing to go away! Holidays tend to have additional beauty requirements on top of your usual must-haves — sun protection is non- negotiable and taking enough for all the family really adds to the weight of a suitcase. Also, it must be packed into your check-in bag if you are carrying bottled sized 100ml-plus — all those value- size sunscreens of 200ml should be bagged to avoid spillages and popped into your case.
When it comes to personal skincare, try not to bring any full- size items with you — minis and travel sets are not only very lightweight but they are usually great value too. Most popular brands now produce trial, travel and other special sizes for holiday use.
Choose the size — be it 30ml, 50ml or 75ml — depending on the length of your trip. A 30ml item is really only weekend-appropriate, 50ml sufficient for a week, and 75ml might just last you for a fortnight away. The best place to find miniature beauty products is in pharmacies. Look to larger stores for a wider selection of brands.
Alternatively, you can simply avoid the weight and liquids issue (and still make savings) by buying your beauty essentials online and collecting them at the airport. Did you know that all fragrances at The Loop in Cork and Dublin airports are a minimum of 20 per cent cheaper than on the High Street? Travel retail offers a whole different level of value from what you can find in stores, and fantastic discounted sets in make-up and skincare are there to be snapped up.
So, how to buy? Before you fly, visit theloop.ie and check what’s listed and the savings to be made. Either buy online and collect your purchase when you come to the airport to travel, or you can buy your item at the airport and bring it away or leave it while you’re gone and then collect it on your way home. On the site (and in The Loop itself) take a look at the Best Beauty Buy, a product or products chosen each month from a featured brand but given a price slash in the region of 50 per cent. Again it’s your decision to collect as you depart or arrive back from your holiday.
Not flying abroad this summer? Irish Ferries, too, have special monthly offers onboard on fragrance, fashion and electrical items, so be sure to check out irishferries.com if you are sailing to Britain or France.
If you are planning a staycation, I’ll make no jokes here about waterproof make-up to cater for torrential downpours. Be sure to pack sunscreen all the same — whenever you’re outdoors for long periods, even when it’s cloudy, you will still pick up ageing ultraviolet rays and possibly suffer some degree of sunburn. So, wherever you’re off too, happy holidays!
Long-term skin protection requires daily sunscreen use, at home and abroad. Suncare for the face doesn’t always marry well with make-up but these oil-free sunscreens from Chanel, in SPF 20, 30 and 50, are designed for the city and beach. All sit beautifully beneath make-up.
Staying with sun protection for both the city and holiday resorts, this lightweight L’Oréal spray is a beauty must-have. Sun protection for hair used to mean a dose of cream or gel with UV protection — not ideal for the office — but this conditioning spray contains L’Oréal’s UV ingredient Mexoryl SO in an invisible mist that protects, detangles and adds shine to hair. Spray liberally a few times daily.
Going make-upfree on the beach isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. A little light coverage and sun protection is ideal: this Vichy compact offers an SPF 30 in a natural-looking creamto-powder formula that absorbs excess sebum and sweat, and suits all skin types. Available in two shades.
