The lowdown on longwear make-up
Afew weeks back we took a look at make-up that could go the distance in hotter climes — and as we were then treated to an unexpected heatwave, we were able to make use of our longwear foundation to stay looking cool at home, too. The page prompted a few readers with dry skin to write in to me, though, so this week I’ll address their concerns with regard to long-stay make-up.
Longwear foundation has been one of the greatest developments in makeup in recent years. Its sophisticated technology allows the foundation to adhere to the face almost like a second skin, giving water-resistant, durable and even coverage that still allows sebum from the pores to pass through without affecting the look of the make-up. This is why longwear foundation is perfect for normal to oily skin types.
However, those with dry skin can find that longwear is not suitable for their skin for this reason — but there are a few products, which I’ll outline below, that do offer longevity alongside the elements of moisture which dry skin needs. Coverage is another issue of concern to women with dry skin — who may experience some redness that they wish to hide while avoiding that desiccated, caked-on look. I’ll go through the best product choices for light, medium and full coverage, too.
Starting with a base that offers light coverage and hydration, BareMinerals’ Ready Foundation, (€28, bareminerals. co.uk) is the first ever solid mineral powder cream foundation. The makeup is simple to apply from the compact — but on top of the SPF 20 and sheer, buildable coverage, the formula has a time- release hydration system that increases skin’s moisture levels during the day. There are 20 shades available.
Next, offering natural to medium coverage, Chanel’s Vitalumière Aqua Fluid is a beautiful foundation, priced €39. It is durable and water-based, with an SPF 15, but gives a dewy finish that sits well on drier skin types.
For medium coverage, Rimmel’s Wake Me Up Foundation, €10.95, is kind on the pocket and comes in six shades. Illuminating particles help to boost your skin’s radiance, and a little of the fluid goes a long way.
Medium to full- coverage products are still popular, but we want a formula that will stay all day and still look as natural as possible. You’ll get exactly that with Bobbi Brown’s Even Finish Foundation, € 39.50. Containing an SPF 15 and formulated on a gel base, the fluid creates a lightweight canvas that stays colour-true for hours. Available in more than 20 shades and half shades, there is a match for everyone.
So whether you want the natural look or full-on coverage, if you have dry skin you can have longwear and hydration. Water-based products that manage to be water-resistant: amazing!
