The story behind the film
For Oldman, whose George Smiley has little to say but oceans of screen time, his glasses were a crucial prop, not least as a way to tell which time frame the film is in. It took months to find the right (second) pair. Eventually, Colin Firth, or specifically a poster of Firth in A Single Man (inset), pointed Oldman in the right direction. The actor went to the shop in Pasadena, near LA, which supplied Firth’s glasses for the film, and that’s where the final pair came from.
