Michael Scott’s se­ries con­cludes with the Ro­man ap­pro­pri­a­tion of Greek the­atre as a sign of cul­tural le­git­i­macy and, later – once they had learned how to do it them­selves – dom­i­nance. In what sur­vives of Ro­man com­edy, it’s in­struc­tive to note the ab­sence of po­lit­i­cal satire and the rel­a­tive lack of self-mock­ery.
