The story behind the film

The Irish Mail on Sunday - TV Week - - SEVEN DAYS -

This was a pet project for Robert Redford (below) who bought the rights to WoodwardW and BernstBernstein’s account of theitheir investigation for $450,000. He th then worked meticulously w with director A Alan J. Pakula dra drafting and redrafting the script. His co-star DustinHoffmanwasDustin Hoffman was similasimilarly enthused by the project and spent hours getting into character by attending news conferences and getting the feel of how reporters worked at the offices of the Washington Post.

The paper would not allow Pakula to shoot in the offices, however, so an exact replica was built, while everything from phone books to desks were accurately copied too.
