From the mo­ment you clap eyes on the 24-piece beauty col­lec­tion by leg­endary fash­ion de­signer Michael Kors, you’ll be head over heels. The col­lec­tion in­cludes three fra­grances, Sporty Cit­rus, Sexy Am­ber and Glam Jas­mine, with nail and lip colours con­tin­u­ing each theme. I met Kors in Lon­don ahead of the Ir­ish launch of the line, and he gave me some in­sights into his beauty phi­los­o­phy: ‘Beauty to me, re­ally, is all about self-con­fi­dence and know­ing your­self. Know­ing what works on you, and know­ing what you feel right in. I like women who know what works on them and what works for their life, and it’s more in­ter­est­ing for me than see­ing some­one rush out and buy what­ever is trendy or new.’

And make no mis­take, if you’re al­ready a fan, this range is very Michael Kors — glam­our is in the brand’s DNA. He ex­plains the ex­pan­sion into beauty: ‘I see that we have such a huge range in the ac­ces­sories world, with shoes and hand­bags and jew­ellery and watches, and I love the idea that you can change your mood and change your look very quickly with the shift in ac­ces­sories. So I ap­proached the idea of cos­met­ics in the same way as I ap­proach ac­ces­sories.’

Tan and gold-flecked dry oil are an in­te­gral part of the range be­cause, Kors says, ‘I started with the base, which is that kind of healthy flush on the skin, and then we re­ally played around with the idea of what trans­forms you quickly. So I think that be­ing able to sep­a­rate the whole idea into three moods of Sexy, Sporty and Glam, it’s kind of a fool­proof way to ex­press the mood you’re in and you switch your lips and you switch your nails — and the next thing you sud­denly have a dif­fer­ent mood.’

So, whose look does Kors most ad­mire? ‘I’m al­ways in­trigued to see Gwyneth Pal­trow, who looks good whether she’s on the red car­pet or drop­ping her kids at school, and it’s the same for Mrs Obama. I’d have to say the same thing with Jen­nifer Lopez, who is glam­orous whether she’s in shorts with her kids or walk­ing the red car­pet. They’re all women with their own point of view, who know what’s work­ing for them.’

And while most of us are more likely to be do­ing the school run rather than prep­ping for an awards cer­e­mony, a lit­tle bit of Michael Kors beauty might add a gilded ve­neer of fan­tasy and glam­our to our lives.
