Trial or miniature products are ideal for short trips away over Christmas — but also a great way to try out a new regime before paying full whack. And this is the time of year when you can get the best for less, or, if you’re really lucky, for no extra cash at all. Here’s how to find the best offers. Start with what you already use, a moisturiser, serum, etc., then check the websites of larger stores and chemists to check if your favourite has an add-on free product or two as a seasonal gift. Or pick a range and see if there are travel sets available and then read up on the products included. Again, do this online — armchair research helps you save, on your pocket and shoe leather!

Keeping your skin picture perfect all night possible with a few simple steps. First, make sure your skin is cleansed (to remove oil and grime) and moisturised (to add hydration). Excess oil causes make-up to slip off the skin — dehydrated skin tends to draw in make-up, so your fun will be hindered by having to make continual touch-ups. Add another step — primer before foundation. A primer is oilfree and fills pores and fine lines with silicone so the skin looks smoother all night. The best to try? Clinique’s new Superprimers, €27. With six colourcorrecting shades and feather-light silicones, they create a smoothing veil over the skin that stays all night.

What a fun idea! L’Oréal Professional have created HAIRchalks, eight temporary tones that give a shock of colour and last for up to three shampoos (€18 each). L’Oréal trialled the colours at London Fashion Week for S/S ’14 in the Felder Felder and Ashish shows. In Felder, brunettes were given ocean-blue tips, blondes coral pink. In Ashish, a horizontal colour block effect was created using five shades to add a wild element. The chalks come in liquid form: paint on the hair and allow to dry. You can try the chalks at home or book a salon session if you prefer. To find a stockist or salon near you, check out lorealprofes Bobbi Brown’s Christmas gifts are always hugely popular — clever colour collections that incorporate bestsellers, brush sets, and multi-purpose palettes like this one for eyes and lips.
