How to achieve that... FLAWLESS FESTIVE FACE!
Last week we looked at simple party make-up tricks that would add some drama to your regular look — a smoky eye, false lashes and the ubiquitous red lip, all festive favourites. But today isn’t about that kind of beauty. No, this week we relax a little bit and choose a more subtle look that’ll work equally well at a family get-together or casual night out with old pals. Ideally we’re hoping to achieve a festive make-up look that is more in keeping with ‘sophisticated gift wrapping’ rather than ‘colourful novelty reindeer jumper’. What’s more, we want to apply it quickly and keep it in place all day, so the application must be easy and the products durable.
Starting with the skin, apply concealer where needed (on dark circles or redness) and sweep a layer of foundation powder on top for all-day coverage. Try MAC’s Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation, €31.50.
For eyes, metallics are the best option. Fresher than a smoky eye, metal shades instantly brighten the eyes and, teamed with black mascara, need no other lid colour unless you want to add a delicate touch of liner to define the upper lid — if so, use charcoal rather than black. Choose gold, copper or bronze as befits the season — look for Maybelline’s Bold Gold or Back to the Bronze, € 7.49 each, for richly pigmented, long-wearing shades.
Cheek colour is important, tan not so much. To tan or not for Christmas... your decision, but if you decide not to apply it, wearing a touch of blush over your foundation adds youthfulness and vibrancy. Peach is a natural pairing with a gold or bronze eye (choose pink and you had better be under 25!). A light dab on the cheeks is sufficient; pop this on in natural daylight to be sure you haven’t overdone it!
For the lips, keep with the peachy theme or go stronger with a red or berry (see below). The metal shade on your eyes will guarantee luminosity and warmth; the cheek colour is subtle and fresh, so add a peach hue and you’ve a pretty daytime look. Go for red and look party-perfect, or try berry for a date.
Complete the look with nail colour to match your chosen lip colour. If you’re worried about overco-ordinating lips and nails, try different finishes. Matte lipstick was finish of A/W 2013, so pair this with a high-gloss polish. Two coats of varnish are always better than one, so apply a topcoat such as Sally Hansen’s Miracle Shine, €10.95, or if you haven’t time to wait for the polish to dry, the glossy Insta-Dri, €7.95, hardens varnish in a trice. Happy Christmas!
