Why we love it Over 2 bil­lion copies of An­gry Birds have been down­loaded, which is more than one copy for ev­ery sin­gle smart­phone user in the world. In this spin-off of the orig­i­nal game, our fu­ri­ous feath­ered friends whizz around a se­ries of zany race­tracks in over­pow­ered go-karts. If the rac­ing doesn’t hook you, the stun­ning graph­ics and char­ac­ter­ful birds cer­tainly will. Warn­ing: do not start play­ing if you have work to do.

What it does In­volves you in all-out war at the sea­side.

Why we love it You do lit­er­ally ‘ fight them on the beaches’ in this com­bat strat­egy game from the mak­ers of the mega-hit game Clash Of Clans. You and your ex­pe­di­tionary force bat­tle across an ar­chi­pel­ago of beau­ti­ful is­lands to free their en­slaved people from the evil Black­guard. The ar­chi­pel­ago is also full of trea­sure for you to find. Playable in ei­ther sin­gle or mul­ti­player for­mats, this is per­fect sum­mer hol­i­day fare.

Why we love it Life­sum is a per­sonal tracker app that pro­vides ac­cu­rate calo­rie counts for the food you eat and en­ergy you ex­ert dur­ing ex­er­cise, plans health and fit­ness pro­grammes, and mon­i­tors your progress. It comes from Stock­holm (all the de­sign­ers look in­fu­ri­at­ingly per­fect) and has that cool, el­e­gant Scan­di­na­vian feel. To ac­cess all the app’s fea­tures, you pay a sub­scrip­tion of €6 a month or €30 a year.

Why we love it Sleep Talk Recorder has been the No 1 paid-for app on the iTunes store (it’s free for An­droid de­vices), mostly be­cause it’s fun, record­ing any­thing you or your part­ner say in your sleep and in­deed any noises you make – with of­ten hi­lar­i­ous re­sults. The snores it records can pro­vide proof to spouses who deny they do it but also, more se­ri­ously, can help de­tect the con­di­tion of sleep ap­noea.

Why we love it This app of­fers (al­most) ev­ery­thing you need as you go through your morn­ing rou­tine: an alarm, weather fore­casts, traf­fic re­ports, un­read emails and up­com­ing ap­point­ments. A sim­i­lar app for iPhone/iPad users, called Morn­ing – Weather, To-Do, News And More (€ 3.59), adds the lat­est news and share prices to the mix. Nei­ther app, sadly, makes that cru­cial first cup of tea.

Why we love it Hole 19 does ev­ery­thing for golfers ex­cept hit the ball. It gives you an aerial view of each hole when you’re out on the course, tells you pre­cisely how far ev­ery shot you’ve struck has gone, cal­cu­lates the dis­tance to the hole, tracks all your scores and pro­vides data to help you im­prove your game. More than 22,000 cour­ses around the world have been mapped, and yours can be added if it isn’t al­ready avail­able.
