POINTING A FINGER AT NAIL STAINS

Speaking of nails, few of us ever think of using a base coat before applying polish because it adds so much more time to a manicure, but when the nails become heavily stained we can only add more varnish to disguise it. Nude nails look nice in summer though so let’s hit the kitchen cupboards for stain removal ideas. Look for a lemon, baking soda or white vinegar — each of these works well at lifting discolouration. Use safely, with each add one teaspoon to a cup of warm water, and soak the nails for a few minutes. After use, rinse, dry and apply nail or hand cream.

CREATIVE SMASHBOX LINES UP WITH ‘LIGHTS OUT’ SANTIGOLD

Heads up, music fans, Smashbox has teamed up with Brit and MTV award winning singer Santigold to create the hottest make-up collection you will see this summer. Serpent collages feature heavily in the fivecolour palettes for eyes (€32) and the collectible snake-head lipstick ring adorned with Swarovski crystals (€45) but you’ll find the colours in the entire range are vibrant and fun. The collection is available now in Boots, see www.smashbox.co.uk. Among self-tans, a liquid offers better value than a lotion — it will go a lot further and has added moisturisers. They dry faster, so if you have limited time a liquid is the obvious choice. He-Shi are an award winning unisex tan brand. This new Rapid Tan liquid for face and body (colour medium to dark) offers speedy absorption and a one-hour development time, transforming you from pasty to tasty in minutes. Here’s a neat trick — get the illusion of thicker hair by adding volume to roots, the idea being that bigger hair looks fuller. And volume improves many styles, like an up do, or a messy ‘undo’. This spray is a bargain and gives root lift that lasts all day long. Spritz on damp roots and dry in the opposite direction to how the hair falls. Using different creams to create face contour is fine in cooler weather, but when it gets warm it’s going to melt. It’s time to get sun kissed with powder, using a matte bronzer like this super-sized one from YSL and brushing it on the face to sculpt and define. Add a touch where the sun would hit the skin too; the forehead, nose and chin. Available in three shades, perfect for year-round tan and definition.
