An­drew Gra­ham Dixon (left) con­sid­ers Wal­ter Sick­ert in this sec­ond episode. A for­mer ac­tor and, more re­cently and bizarrely, a Jack the Rip­per sus­pect, Sick­ert was by 1914 too old to go to war. In­stead he painted pic­tures of those left be­hind.
