A GUIDE TO WINTER HAIR

The Irish Mail on Sunday - TV Week - - BODY & SOUL -

Caring for hair against the damaging effects of the sun is routine these days – UV filters to protect from fading, and replenishing masks to combat dehydration. But what of winter? As the weather gets colder we will turn up the heating, endure more rain and windy days, and probably make less of an effort to keep our hair strong and healthy. A few simple tweaks of our beauty routines now, however, will give us a better barnet whatever the temperature.

Dehydration is the biggest concern. Central heating and air conditioning are both equally drying. For curly hair this can cause frizz and coarseness, in fine hair it increases static and flyaway stands.

To combat dehydration, there are several steps we can take. If your regular shampoo/conditioner is performing well, stick with it. If not, get a duo that offers more hydration. Kiehl’s damage repairing and rehydrating range contains ingredients you find in skin care like hyaluronic acid and moringa oil. Prices start at €18 for shampoo.

All hair types benefit from regular deep treating masques, particularly in the colder months. Shorter hair can be treated once a fortnight to help repair and reinforce the hair lengths. L’Oreal Professionel Absolut Repair Lipidium Masque is the perfect winter masque, protecting against bad weather, damage and dehydration, €16.80 in select salons.

If you are really prone to static, spritz a hairbrush with a little hairspray and run through the hair halfway through blow drying to reduce the static fast. Also, check your brush type, plastic bristles apparently cause more electricity in the hair, choose natural bristles if possible with a wooden handle.

For flyaways and parched ends, skip the siliconbased styling products in favour of natural oil-based treatments. Silicon is great for coating the hair and smoothing frizziness but that’s about it – natural oils can benefit the hair in the long term by building on the hair strength. Look for Argan or coconut as the base oils. Schwarzkopf BC Miracle Barbary Fig and Keratin Restorative Treatment is a blend of weightless oils and micro-keratin molecules that revives lacklustre locks, € 22.95, salons only. With simple steps your crowning glory will look great throughout winter, but on those really cold days invest in a hat and keep those locks under wraps.
