Heavenly hydration Serums to ease winter woes

The Irish Mail on Sunday - TV Week - - BODY & SOUL -

Winter’s biggest skin concern is dehydration. All skin types can experience dehydration so rehydration is essential, and a serum at this time of year is ideal. Which to choose? All are hydration based so that box is ticked, but consider your skin type before purchase. Would you benefit from an anti-ageing action? Is your skin dry or oily, or does keeping your skin healthy feel like a challenge?

These concerns should determine your choice – there are options for all skin types that will work to correct issues while adding maximum moisture.

Anti-ageing and wrinkle reduction are always popular. Origins new super-strength Plantscription Serum has proven skin-smoothing action along with optimum hydration, €64. New to the market, Bioque Serum XL has skin firming and smoothing effects, www.bioque.ie, €67.57.

To boost skin’s barrier function, look to Shiseido’s Ultimune, €85, or Clinique’s Custom-Repair Serum, € 60. Both work on the needs of the skin that becomes periodically impaired or irritated.

Oilier skin types probably feel a serum would increase spotty outbreaks or oil production, but this is not the case. Hydration is moisture not oil, so a serum that contains an oil-control factor offers the moisture needed while stemming the flow of oil and blackhead formation. Clarins Pore Minimising Serum, (€ 30) and Balance Me Congested Skin Serum, (€18, Debenhams) both use skin- clearing ingredients that help and hydrate oily skin.

If you’re a younger girl with few skin concerns and just need a hydrating action, there are straightforward serums. Avène’s new Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Serum is a concentrated dose of hydration, €25, and Vichy’s Aqualia Thermal Serum has been reformulated into a more intense moisturefilled serum, € 24. Both of these serums have thermal water as a base, so both encourage skin healing and repair.

To use any serum, apply to cleansed skin and allow it to sink in for two or three minutes before applying moisturiser. Serums are generally in a light, gel-like formula to help speed its passage into the skin. Their powers lie in their moisturising properties. Use the right serum and you should see a difference in your skin almost immediately.
