Mapp and Lucia

The Irish Mail on Sunday - TV Week - - MONDAY -

The last adaptation of E.F. Benson’s comic novels (starring Prunella Scales, Geraldine McEwan and Nigel Hawthorne) aired in the 1980s. This new, three-part version was written by Steve Pemberton, who also stars as the madly camp Georgie, with Anna Chancellor and Miranda Richardson (right) as Lucia and Mapp. Set in 1930 in the picturesque Sussex village of Tilling, the story begins with the social-climbing Elizabeth Mapp obsequiously welcoming her summer tenant, Emmeline Lucas (Lucia), to her delightfully appointed home, only to find herself at loggerheads with her equally snooty guest.
