JACI STEPHEN’S ultimate insight into the week’s soaps

The Irish Mail on Sunday - TV Week - - NEWS -

There are always storylines producers turn to when they want to grab headlines – affairs, terminal illness and murder being among the most popular. And then there are drugs.

Now look. I know it’s part of soap’s function to educate as well as entertain but the drug issues makes for immense tedium because the subject is so limited dramatically. There are only two endings to any plot: people come off drugs or they stay on them and suffer dire consequences.

Barely have we recovered from Holly’s drug overdose death in Emmerdale than the show is promising us a Breaking Bad-style storyline in which the Barton boys discover a cannabis farm. One word: boring.

This week, Corrie is at it, too, when a face from Robert’s past turns up, offering drugs. Robert turns them down, but Daniel is an eager purchaser and ends up unconscious. Well, that’s one good outcome. To every cloud and all that.
