transgender, people on second marriages who have blended families. In some ways it’s all quite messy, but I think people’s lives are a bit messy. Everybody’s aspiring to perfection – the perfection you see on social media – but deep down everyone’s floundering.’
That includes most of Kate’s team. There’s stern Judy, played by Lewis actress Rebecca Front, who’s spoiling for a fight after being beaten to the top job by Kate; Rick (Kenny Doughty), the deputy registrar who is going through heart-breaking IVF with his wife, but is in love with someone else; and James (Mark Stanley), who’s about to turn his life upside down. Only Anna (Rochenda Sandall) and Talia, played by new Doctor Who companion Mandip Gill, seem immune from crisis. And then there are the stories of the people they deal with.
‘Almost all the tales have come via the registrars I met during my research,’ says Kay. ‘This is about real stories that are happening up and down the country. Sometimes I’d go back over my work – some of it’s not politically correct – and wonder if I should change it. But then I’d remind myself that I want to tell the truth, even if it’s not PC.’
