Soap Watch

The Irish Mail on Sunday - TV Week - - NEWS - CLAUDIA CONNELL’S ultimate insight into the week’s soaps

Nobody can undergo a personality transformation quite so dramatically – or quickly – as a soap character. This week we learn Corrie vicar Billy is harbouring dark secrets from his past. He’s previously been so mildmannered that, frankly, returning a library book late would be a struggle to believe. Earlier this year we witnessed Rover’s barmaid Eva change from a sweet-but-dim homebody into the deranged girlfriend from hell who brought down Underworld.

EastEnders’ Abi, always the nicer of the Branning sisters, continues her metamorphosis from wholesome teenager into the unhinged lunatic trying to destroy her sibling’s life for no real reason. And let’s not forget Vincent, who arrived in Albert Square as a gangster. He went from menacing villain to doting dad in the space of two years.

So far Emmerdale has avoided the personality transplant trap although they’re dangerously close to turning Robert into a half-decent human being now he’s become a father.
