Catas­tro­phe that left a na­tion in mourn­ing

LAMIA Flight 2933 was a char­ter flight from Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bo­livia to Medellin in Colom­bia on Novem­ber 28 last year.

There were 77 peo­ple on board in­clud­ing a 68-strong party from the Chapecoense foot­ball team – in­clud­ing play­ers, board mem­bers, coach­ing staff, of­fice per­son­nel and jour­nal­ists. The pi­lot re­ported an elec­tri­cal fault soon af­ter start­ing his de­scent into Medellin and then re­ported a fuel emer­gency. The plane van­ished from air traf­fic con­trol radars at 9.55pm lo­cal time. Four min­utes later the plane hit a moun­tain ridge. Three play­ers, de­fend­ers Alan Ruschel (above) and He­lio Neto (below, left) and goal­keeper Jak­son Foll­mann (below, right), were among the six sur­vivors.
