The Irish Mail on Sunday - - MORE TECH -

EEG technology has been used by doctors and researchers for decades to monitor the brainwaves of patients. This technology has now been brought within reach of all of us thanks to a young Australian’s high-tech start-up. Tan Le, the founder of Emotiv, has produced an EEG headset that monitors the neuron activity in your brain to measure your emotions. The €300 headset connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone app that monitors your brain activity. The app’s screen shows your neuron activity in real-time. That brain activity is then converted into readings for emotions such as relaxation, excitement and stress. The Emotiv technology is so effective that marketing firms are using it to measure how people respond to labels in shops or when using a particular feature while driving a car. However, the most fascinating feature is its ability to control objects using just your thoughts. Emotiv has released a dedicated app, MindDrone, that allows you to fly a small drone using just your thoughts when you’re wearing the headset. Today, it’s a drone but we may soon see a time when you can turn on lights or the TV simply by thinking about it.
