Why is there such a buzz about..?

Behind Her Eyes (Netflix)

-

There was a bit of a hoo-ha when Sarah Pinborough’s page-turner came out four years ago. It was all about the ending, which divided readers, some miffed beyond belief by a dénouement that makes The Drowning’s recent goofy climax look entirely credible.

So to the plot: divorced mum-of-one Louise, played by Simona Brown, bumps into a Scottish man, David (Tom Bateman), in a bar, and there’s a kiss. Next day she finds out that he is her new boss. What are the chances? As few as her then bumping into David’s wealthy and beautiful but clearly troubled wife Adele (Bono’s daughter, Eve Hewson, right). And then it gets messy as Louise starts having sex with David, and also meeting up with Adele – without telling either of them. Eyebrows gravitate even further heavenwards when Adele gives Louise a notebook about dreams to stop her night terrors.

While the book was certainly a propulsive read, the pace here is a little slack, though TV’s visuals of its more outré elements aid comprehension if not, ultimately, belief.

If you have read the book already, it’s fun trying to spot clues to an ending that would cause Miss Marple’s mind, if not her knitting, to unravel. If you haven’t, this weird love triangle will pique your interest. Mark Cook
