Th­ese are the fa­mous open­ing words of Tol­stoy’s im­mor­tal novel, and they set a mood, a creative stance. The au­thor was, above all, an ob­server of life, not a cold an­a­lyst, and his char­ac­ters live and breathe the pain and con­fu­sions that the hu­man race is heir to. Great ques­tions, such as the na­ture or even the pos­si­bil­ity of hap­pi­ness, are asked but not an­swered. We sim­ply see peo­ple through the eyes of a con­sum­mate artist and learn what we can. But hey, don’t just take my word for it. Af­ter Oprah Win­frey read and gave thumbs up to the book in 2004, it be­came a huge best­seller in Amer­ica, and what can be big­ger than that? He­len Ed­mund­son’s award­win­ning stage adap­ta­tion, open­ing at the Gate next week, has been suc­cess­ful else­where, and will be di­rected here by Michael Barker-Caven.
