PAUL MOTIAN Paul Motian on Broadway Vol 4 Winter & Winter ★★★★★

Drummer Motian’s latest Broadway foray unites him with Chris Potter (tenor), Larry Grenadier (bass) and, alternating, Rebecca Martin (vocals) and Masabumi Kikuchi (piano). Potter, whether enfilading the vocals or soloing, is absolutely stunning; consistently original, yet somehow absorbing each performance’s emotional climate, ironic, anguished, knowing, evocative or whatever. And Martin is good in this heavyweight company; where the colourist in Motian creates considerable rhythmic looseness. Her Folks Who Live on the Hill, for example, is impressively surefooted. But the finest performances on a striking CD are those with Kikuchi. Despite a distressing tendency to shadow his lines with gravelly moans, he’s an expressive player of great depth and range. I Loves You Porgy and Never Let Me Go (both takes) are sublimely impressionistic standouts on a superb CD. http://uk.hmboutique.com
