Christmas is the season for panto and comedy gigs, and Madness in many ways combine the two. The long-in-the-teeth Londoners have managed to nurture a stop-start career over the years while still maintaining their status as cherished ’80s popsters. No one goes to a Madness gig to hear a set that doesn’t include the likes of Our House, Baggy Trousers, One Step Beyond, My Girl, Embarrassment, Wings of a Dove and Driving in my Car – sturdy hits that ensured the self-styled nutty men became credible survivors. The band’s mainstream success may have dried up in the ’90s, but they are definitely more than just a fond memory, and if we don’t see grown men and women, who really should know better, dance the nutty dance this coming Sunday, we’ll be very surprised.
