Comedy records are, understandably, rarely listened to after the first time – unless you’re desperately easily amused, why laugh at a joke when you already know the punchline? This is why Tenacious D – who surely owe their stadia filling status to the star power of portly comic actor Jack Black rather than to anything approaching musical talent – are a duo constantly in search of new jokes – any jokes. Only occasionally do they get it right, in their lampooning of bombastic rock (on their 2002 self-titled debut, a track called Wonderboy); most of the time it’s as a funny as a life-threatening illness. Admittedly, in a live setting the juvenile humour quotient might be raised from frown to titter level, but it’s too late and the material is just not funny enough. Mind you, what the feck do I know – this gig sold out in minutes.
