His strat­egy is to draw us in and then per­suade us to try and fig­ure out what is go­ing on. A paint­ing will seem to be about its sur­face pat­tern, ren­dered in lush, richly tex­tured colours. Then a shaft of light will sug­gest an­other di­men­sion al­to­gether. One thinks of MC Escher’s in­tri­cate lat­tice-works, har­bour­ing vis­ual il­lu­sions and para­doxes. Hogg him­self says that he aims to keep the eye guess­ing as a an­ti­dote to a vis­ual cul­ture of in­stant ap­pre­hen­sion and con­sump­tion. He wants to slow down the trans­ac­tion be­tween im­age and viewer, and he suc­ceeds.
