This previously unreleased double, made over one day’s concerts in Hamburg in the mid-1950s, is an emblematic snapshot of a vanished world. This touring edition of the JATP All-Stars, with trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge, and tenors Illinois Jacquet and Flip Phillips, backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio plus drummer Gene Krupa, preserved the competitive edge producer Norman Granz liked. But the scaled-down band made for a slightly less unruly locking of musical horns than usual and, buoyed by the happy atmosphere, the front line have a good time on the first CD. The best music overall is on the second, however, where Peterson, Herb Ellis and Ray Brown engage with breath-taking elan on their set and, with Krupa added, back Ella Fitzgerald (left) for another; the voice sounds a bit overworked, but otherwise she’s in prime form. www.freshsoundrecords.com
