IMPROVISATA – SINFONIE CON TITOLI

Europa Galante/Fabio Biondi (violin) Virgin Classics 363 4302

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - Music Reviews - MICHAEL DERVAN

This is exactly what it says, a disc of symphonies with titles, and some of the titles are colourful enough. There’s The Storm at Sea (by Carlo Monza), The House of the Devil (Boccherini), and The Bells of Rome (Giuseppe Demachi). But most of the music, I’m afraid, is not. It’s mostly a case of the cover being rather better than the book. Europa Galante play with a spunkiness which, strangely, often creates an effect that seems too even in pattern. Think of a skilled actor delivering doggerel and you’ll have the idea. Apart from the Boccherini, which is well worth a hearing, this is really only a disc for listeners interested in the smallest byways of the 18th-century symphony. www.virginclassics.com
