Finding the elegance in Elgar
TASMIN LITTLE (VIOLIN), UO/VERNON HANDLEY Whitla Hall, Belfast Fri 7.45pm £12.50/£15 048-90668798
Tasmin Little (above) is the fiddler of the moment when it comes to the Elgar Violin Concerto. The work features in the schedules of both the Ulster Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in programmes marking the 150th anniversary of Elgar’s birth. And Little is the soloist on both occasions. She can be heard tonight in Belfast, and on September 28th in Dublin. The programmers for the two orchestras have also thought alike in choosing works to follow the Elgar, Sibelius’s Third Symphony in Belfast, and his First in Dublin. Vernon Handley, a distinguished Elgarian and former principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra, is this week’s conductor. Joseph Wolfe, son of a distinguished Sibelian, Colin Davis, conducts in September.
