DAVID SYLVIAN Vicar St, Dublin Wed 7.30pm 154.80 0818-719390 Working with the cream of UK and US session players, collaborating with the likes of Can’s Holger Czukay, King Crimson’s Robert Fripp, Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Ryuichi Sakamoto and artists Shrinro Ohtake and Russell Mills, publishing a limited edition book of Polaroid collages, releasing documentary videos – it’s a long way from Beckenham, Kent, and an upbringing where you were once known as plain, ordinary David Batt. David Sylvian first came to prominence in the sophisticated glam group Japan in the mid-1970s. Reviled during the punk era, by the beginning of the 1980s Japan’s credibility and success improved through their unwitting association with the New Romantic movement. The band’s androgynous image – all pretty boys in Max Factor slap, hair by Vidal Sassoon – made them fashionable after years of hard graft. And still the former lead singer of Japan continues in his idiosyncratic manner, releasing albums as and when he feels like it. Live outings for Sylvian are rare, so approach this one with the degree of reverence it deserves. TONY CLAYTON-LEA Can’T see ThaT?
