Ticket gig of the week

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - News -

Tuesday’s collaboration between diva Marlena Shaw and producer Mad Professor at the Spiegeltent in Dublin’s Docklands for the Fringe Festival was an intriguing idea – one which worked in spite of itself. Stuck behind his turntables at the rear of the venue, the funky fellow was marginalised by Shaw, who commanded the stage throughout. Assisted by a tight backing band, the chanteuse dished up glossy 1980s soul with forays into scat singing and jazzy instrumentals. “Life’s better when you've got a lil’ something in you,” she sniggered. Life's also pretty damn good when you’re listening to Marlena. Words: Denis Clifford. Photograph: Matt Kavanagh
